My kids, thankfully, are all obsessed with things I can get behind. My two-year-old will watch Cat in the Hat and Winnie the Pooh until the cows come home. I will take that over Dora the Explorer any day. For my eight-year-old, barbies and dolls don't cut it. She's a Harry Potter nut. And my ten-year-old...well, he selected a Fandom near and dear to my heart - Doctor Who. They all share in each other's obsessions, though. My son dons his Gryffindor robe and engages his sister in a Wizard's battle, where my daughter whips out her own sonic screwdriver and plays the part of Rose Tyler to my son's 10th Doctor. And the two year old? Well, she's following behind with a light saber in one hand and a wand in the other, humming the opening song to Doctor Who.
I find it very important to encourage a kid's growth in their passions. Like me, my kids are not sports nuts. They read, draw, and pretend. Between them, they own more than enough costumes to fill a costume shop and every prop known to man to go along with them. So, when it came time to create a space for them to feel was theirs, where they could feel at home... it was no surprise what took hold.
